Physician Moral Injury: More Than Just Burnout

Our CEO, Mark Craig, recently had the opportunity to write this editorial for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution because the challenges facing physicians in Georgia go far beyond burnout. Doctors are caught between two serious threats: Frivolous malpractice lawsuits that push them toward defensive medicine, and insurance companies that deny or delay care patients need by labeling treatments “not medically necessary.”

This results in what’s called “moral injury”—when clinicians can’t practice medicine as they took an oath to do. And it’s deeply damaging to our healthcare system and the communities it serves. Tort reform is an important part of the solution, but we also need to confront the power of insurance companies to ensure doctors can focus on patient care and rural hospitals can survive.

For a deeper look at how insurance corporations are preying on rural hospitals and communities across the country, we encourage you to read our full report.
